How TikTok became the world’s most controversial app

Despite growing national security concerns prompting federal and state-level bans on TikTok in the U.S., the app continues to thrive. Last year, TikTok remained one of the most popular platforms globally, amassing 52 million downloads in the U.S. and 733 million worldwide—even as over 3 billion people were restricted from accessing it.

In January, former President Donald Trump granted TikTok a 75-day reprieve from a potential ban, but its parent company, ByteDance, has yet to find a buyer.

The U.S. is not the first major market to restrict TikTok. In 2020, India imposed a complete ban, cutting off roughly 200 million users. The Indian government cited security risks, alleging that ByteDance’s ties to the Chinese government threatened national sovereignty.

Other regions, including the U.K. and the European Union, have enacted partial bans, prohibiting government employees and military personnel from installing the app on work devices.
