"TikTok's parent company, ByteDance, is attempting to address U.S. national security concerns by proposing a restructuring plan. This plan involves Oracle continuing to store U.S. user data within the United States, ensuring no access from China. Content moderation for American users would also remain within the U.S. This proposal aims to counter U.S. officials' claims of close ties between TikTok and the Chinese government.

The discussions, led by ByteDance investors Susquehanna International Group, General Atlantic, and KKR, are being held with the White House to find a resolution to the law requiring ByteDance to divest TikTok or face a U.S. ban. The law, enacted due to concerns about potential Chinese influence operations, has been challenged by free speech advocates who argue it violates the First Amendment.

The fate of TikTok, used by nearly half of all Americans, remains uncertain as the January 19th deadline for ByteDance to comply with the divestiture law approaches."
