Trump Shifts Stance on Daylight Saving Time, Calling It a ‘50-50 Issue’

Trump Shifts Stance on Daylight Saving Time,

Former President Donald Trump appears less eager to eliminate the biannual time change, describing the issue as evenly divided in public opinion. His latest comments contrast with his previous stance, in which he called daylight saving time (DST) "inconvenient." Just days before Americans set their clocks forward, Trump indicated he may not prioritize ending the practice.
Key Highlights
Trump’s Position: Speaking from the Oval Office on Thursday, Trump said, “It’s a 50-50 issue, and if something’s a 50-50 issue, it’s hard to get excited about it.”
Public Preferences: He acknowledged some prefer extra daylight in the evening, while others want morning light for safer school commutes.
Legislative Action Needed: Although Trump previously suggested Republicans would work to end DST, doing so requires congressional approval.

Will Trump Eliminate Daylight Saving Time?
Trump’s latest remarks suggest he may not push for change, despite calling DST "costly to our Nation" in a December post on Truth Social. The decision to abolish DST or make it permanent ultimately rests with Congress.
When Does Daylight Saving Time Start?
Most U.S. states will switch to daylight saving time at 2 a.m. on Sunday, March 9. Clocks will move forward one hour, leading to later sunsets but also a lost hour of sleep. DST will remain in effect until November 2.
Public Debate and Elon Musk’s Input
Trump ally Elon Musk recently surveyed users on his platform, X, about their DST preferences. The results showed 58.1% favoring an extra hour of daylight in the evening, while 41.9% preferred the opposite.
Why Does Daylight Saving Time Exist?
DST was first introduced in 1918 as a wartime measure to maximize daylight hours. It became federal law in 1966 under the Uniform Time Act. Advocates argue that DST conserves energy and enhances quality of life, while critics link it to health issues, car accidents, and sleep disturbances.
Lawmakers have repeatedly tried to reform DST, coming closest in 2022 when the Senate passed the Sunshine Protection Act to make DST permanent. However, the bill stalled in the House, leaving the twice-yearly clock changes intact.
As the debate continues, Trump’s latest comments suggest he is unlikely to take decisive action on the issue anytime soon.
